Grasmere Nursing Home

The following is CQC's published account of its assessment, published 13 August 2025. References to “we” mean CQC. It describes findings at that time.

Date of Assessment: 24 June to 18 July 2025

Grasmere nursing home is a 'care home' that provides accommodation for older people, some of whom require support with their nursing needs. We reviewed Safe, Caring and Well-led key questions at this inspection visit.

At our last inspection Grasmere had 3 breaches of regulation in safe and well-led. We reviewed the concerns leading to those breaches at this inspection visit and found most of the concerns had been addressed.

At this inspection we found one breach in Well-led in respect of the governance of the service. This was in relation to failure to appropriately implement the Mental Capacity Act, to seek consent and assessing capacity around specific decisions. This element of the breach was ongoing from the last inspection. We have asked the provider for an action plan to address the concerns.

We also found the provider lacked oversight into the systems and processes. Audits were not verified, and concerns were missed or not fully addressed. We received information following the inspection which demonstrated that the provider had allegedly allowed practice in contravention of their own risk assessments which placed people at potential risk.

Whilst there were areas to improve, there had been improvements made since the last inspection.

Staff knew people well and provided safe, effective and responsive support. Staff had a clear understanding of their responsibilities under safeguarding from abuse, while the provider understood their regulatory responsibilities to report allegations. People were generally involved in the management of risk to their care and support. People were supported by enough staff and staff felt supported by the provider. The staff team was consistent and long standing; this was valued by the staff themselves as well as people and their relatives.

Appropriate infection control procedures were in place and the environment was kept clean and a safe place for people to live. Staff monitored people’s health to support healthy living. Staff made sure people understood their care and support needs which enabled them to give informed consent to everyday things like what to wear and what to eat.
