About Care Homes in Scotland

Care homes in Scotland are regulated and inspected by the Care Inspectorate, Scotland's independent scrutiny and improvement body for care services.

Unlike England's CQC ratings, Scottish care homes are graded on a 6-point scale (1-6) across five key questions:

  • How well do we support people's wellbeing?
  • How good is our care and support planning?
  • How good is our setting?
  • How good is our staff team?
  • How good is our leadership?

Grades range from 1 (Unsatisfactory) to 6 (Excellent), with most homes achieving grades of 4 (Good) or 5 (Very Good).
