Our Story
Finding a care home for a loved one is one of the most difficult decisions a family can face. It often happens at a time of crisis, when emotions are running high and time is short.
We built CareHomeGuide to make this process easier. By bringing together care-home records and practical guidance, we help families make informed decisions without having to piece together information from multiple sources.
More Than a Directory
Alongside the directory, we build free, practical tools for families and carers. Memory Companion is a daily orientation screen for people living with dementia, showing the date, weather, and family photos, alongside a private diary families can share. It's completely free, and currently being used by families supported by Age UK.
Our Data
CareHomeGuide aggregates and presents publicly available data to help you compare care homes. Our information includes:
- Inspection ratings and reports — Based on regulatory assessments of care quality
- Care types and specialisms — Whether a home offers residential, nursing, or specialist dementia care
- Location and contact details — Accurate addresses and phone numbers
- Capacity — Number of beds where available
Regulatory records, provider details and photographs can have different update dates. Where we publish checked information, we show its source and check date. A check date is not an inspection date or a guarantee that nothing has changed since.
How we check information
CareHomeGuide uses CQC records for England and Care Inspectorate records for Scotland. These regulators assess services; CareHomeGuide does not carry out its own care-quality inspections.
Our checked listing additions use home-specific provider pages, regulatory records or information supplied by a provider. We match the home and its address before adding practical details. Provider descriptions of facilities are kept separate from regulatory findings.
Published starting fees are dated and sourced where available. They are not individual quotes. Area estimates and calculators help with planning, but the home must confirm the cost for the room and care required. Our funding guides link to official sources and identify which country their rules cover.
Some listings still have limited information or temporary images. We add genuine photographs as they are checked, rather than treating a generic image as evidence of a particular home.
Community and editorial examples
The community includes reader contributions and discussion starters prepared through our editorial workflow. Identified editorial examples are labelled and attributed to CareHomeGuide; they should not be read as personal testimonials from independent families. A reader can add a genuine contribution to a discussion that began with an editorial example.
Free access and paid listings
Families can search the directory and read our public guides free of charge. Providers can have paid listings with additional content and enquiry features. A paid listing does not change a regulator's inspection rating.
What We Don't Do
We provide information to help you research and compare care homes, but we're not a care placement service. We don't:
- Make recommendations about which home to choose
- Arrange care placements or admissions
- Provide financial or legal advice
- Conduct our own inspections
For professional advice, we recommend consulting with your local council, a social worker, or an independent care advisor.
