St Fillans provides personal and nursing care to up to 71 people across four separate units with adapted facilities. During inspection visits in September 2022, inspectors found poor infection prevention and control practices, including issues with wearing, storage and disposal of personal protective equipment, along with cleanliness concerns in the main and satellite kitchens. The provider took immediate action, purchasing additional clinical bins, providing plastic wipeable boxes for PPE storage, and completing a full cleaning programme including a deep kitchen clean. Staff received guidance on correct PPE use with spot checks implemented to ensure compliance.

A follow-up visit confirmed these improvements had been made. However, inspectors noted that governance systems were not always being used effectively to identify and drive improvements, with internal infection control and dementia audits failing to identify the issues that inspectors had found during their visits.
