Cholwell House Nursing Home

The following is CQC's published account of its assessment, published 1 October 2025. References to “we” mean CQC. It describes findings at that time.

Date of assessment 13 May to 17 June 2025.We carried out this assessment because we received information of concern about people’s care.

Cholwell House Nursing home is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to older adults with physical health care needs and people living with dementia. At the time of the assessment 31 people were living at the service.We looked at all of the quality statements under the key questions safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

The provider was in breach of the legal regulations relating to safe care and treatment and good governance. In instances where CQC has begun a process of regulatory action, we may publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded, if the action has been taken forward. We have also asked the provider for an action plan in response to some of the concerns found at this assessment.

Care planning information for some people did not include enough detail to inform staff how people need to be supported in some aspects of their care needs, which increased the risk that people could be harmed. Additionally, people’s medicines were not always managed safely.

We found some risks in the environment which could pose a risk to people. For example, trailing wires in people’s bedrooms and unsecured topical creams. Leaders took immediate action to make improvements where issues had been identified in the on-site visit.

Governance oversight was not always effective and had not identified the concerns found in this inspection.

However, staff spoke positively about the new manager, leaders and how they worked together as a team. The provider had a good learning culture and people could raise concerns. Managers investigated concerns and shared learning with the team. There were enough skilled and experienced staff to provide safe and effective care. Staff understood their responsibility to keep people safe and to report any concerns or accidents and incidents that could put people at risk of harm. Processes were in place to ensure actions were taken following any adverse incidents and learning was shared throughout the staff team. People’s nutritional needs were assessed and care plans described what support people needed to maintain their nutritional intake.

Staff were aware of people’s likes, dislikes and personal histories. People were supported to have good experiences in the home and outside of the home. For example, a vintage bike festival was held, and people are given opportunities to have trips outside the service.
