About Chaucer House

Chaucer House is a nursing home in Kent, providing care for older people and those living with dementia. The findings below set out what CQC inspectors found there.

Chaucer House, in Kent, is a residential care home providing nursing care to older people and those living with dementia. The CQC rated the home inadequate overall and has placed it in special measures following an inspection prompted by concerns about risks to people. Inspectors found six breaches of legal regulations, including failures around safeguarding, dignity, staffing and safe care.

People were not always protected from harm, and health needs such as pressure ulcer risks were poorly managed. Some staff were described as rough or heavy handed during personal care, and medicines were not always given as prescribed. Governance systems had failed to identify these problems, and staff described a blame culture that discouraged reporting concerns.
