Upton Dene Residential and Nursing Home provides residential and nursing care for older people. The CQC found the service required improvement, identifying breaches relating to safe care, staffing, consent and governance. Risks to people were not always properly assessed or managed, lessons from incidents were not consistently acted on, and mental capacity rules were not always correctly applied.

Staff supervision and appraisals were also behind schedule, though a service improvement plan was already underway.

Despite this, inspectors found staff were kind, caring and compassionate, and people felt safe and well cared for. Medicines were managed appropriately, people had enough to eat and drink, and GP support was accessible. Recruitment practices were safe, though staffing levels drew mixed views from residents and staff.
