Orchard House Nursing Home in Birmingham provides personal and nursing care to older adults, including those living with dementia, for up to 31 people. The CQC rated the service Requires Improvement overall, finding four breaches relating to personalised care, consent for restrictions on privacy, a safe environment and governance. Inspectors found the management team had not always identified shortfalls in safety and quality themselves, though they responded quickly once issues were raised.

Despite this, people and relatives generally spoke positively about their experience. They felt safe, praised the cleanliness and laundry service, and described staff as kind and caring, with a good range of activities. Some relatives noted concerns about response times to care calls and support with specific dietary needs, and communication about care changes was said to be very good.

Date of assessment 13 October 2025 to 06 November 2025. Orchard House Nursing Home is a home for older adults, including those living with dementia. It provides care to people who need personal and nursing care. The building is adapted to provide care and can accommodate 31 people. Twenty-nine people were living at the service at the time of our assessment. The service was led by a registered manager who had been in post for 18 months. We found 4 breaches of regulation regarding how personalised care was for people, a lack of consent for some restrictions on people’s privacy, provision of a safe environment and governance of the service. We completed a comprehensive assessment of the service and have rated the service requires improvement. The registered manager and team were very responsive regarding issues we found during the inspection. However, the systems in place had not enabled the registered manager and team to identify shortfalls in the safety and quality of people’s care for themselves and in some cases the necessary policies and procedures were not in place. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to some of the concerns found at this assessment. In instances where CQC has decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/or appeals have been concluded.
