Chy-An-Towans

The following is CQC's published account of its assessment, published 11 August 2026. References to “we” mean CQC. It describes findings at that time.

Date of assessment: 29 June to 1 July 2026. Chy-an-Towans is a residential care home providing support for up to 10 people with a learning disability and/or autistic people.We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. The provider ensured these principles were embedded in practice. People received personalised care from staff who knew them well. Staff were attuned to people’s individual communication styles and were able to quickly recognise if anyone was upset or becoming distressed. They knew how to provide reassurance and allay any worries people might have.People were safe; staff understood and managed risk while supporting people to take part in activities in their local community, balancing choice, independence and safety. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience.The garden area had been neglected; the provider was taking steps to address this. However, people were frequently out and had alternative access to outdoor spaces. Bedrooms were highly personalised and reflected each person’s tastes and preferences. Some people found living with other people difficult, they had their own accommodation where they could spend time alone if they wanted to.Staff worked together effectively and described a culture where they were well supported and able to ask questions, raise concerns and share learning.Leaders were fully involved in the day to day running of the service and had a good understanding of people’s needs. They continually monitored the service and staff culture.
