Fir Trees House

Fir Trees House is a residential care home providing personal care to five people with mental health needs and learning disabilities, with capacity for up to seven residents living in one large house. During inspection, people and relatives reported that staff did not always support residents to have fulfilling and meaningful everyday lives, with support being primarily safety-focused. For example, the kitchen was kept locked and only accessible with staff supervision, with staff citing health and safety concerns. Support plans did not initially include guidance for positive risk management to encourage skill development in line with residents' wishes, though the registered manager and provider were reviewing plans to incorporate positive risk-taking with a focus on people's strengths. Staff did work with residents to plan for periods of distress, demonstrating awareness of individual interventions and techniques. Residents had choice about their living environment and could personalise their rooms.
