husband needs care but we're still paying a mortgage

my husband has had a stroke and needs full time care now. we're not old he's 61, i'm 58. we have a house with a mortgage still on it and i have no idea what happens now. i work part time. does the house count against us? what do i do first? i feel completely lost

I'm so sorry you're going through this. The house is usually disregarded in the financial assessment if a spouse is still living in it so if you're staying in the house it shouldn't be counted against you. Please do speak to the council's adult social care team as soon as possible, they should be able to explain your options. You shouldn't have to figure this out alone.

Also at 61 your husband might be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare which would mean the NHS covers the costs entirelyit's not just for elderly people. Definitely worth asking about given he's had a stroke.
